Callaway C16 Convertible cometh

The folks at Callaway figured that if their customers were willing to plunk down the cash for a fixed-roof bespoke coupe, they'd be even more smitten with a drop top version. So at next month's New York Auto Show, they'll be debuting the C16 convertible, another supercharged super-Vette creating either 560 or 616 HP from its blown V8.Much like the hardtop version that debuted in Montreal, the open-air version will be able to reach 60 in three and half seconds and on to a top speed over 200 MPH. All that, while still leaving the factory with a five-year, 100k-mile warranty. If you've got the $128,765 entry fee, go on and read the full press release after the jump.

The new premium athlete in the compact class is now set to enter the market: Audi proudly presents the second generation of the A3. Powerful four- and six-cylinder engines with up to 184 kW (250 bhp), quattro drive and the new, automatic DSG Direct Shift Gearbox team up with the highly dynamic suspension to provide exactly the driving pleasure you will sense at very first sight when admiring the sporting lines of the body. And the exclusivity of the car's features and materials once again conveys the supreme standard so typical of Audi's large models in the compact class.
The new A3 is therefore entering the market with the clear intention as the most sporting car in its class to thrill not only the loyal A3 driver, but also many new purchasers in the market. And these new customers must be won over against competitors with a big name and a renowned image. Competitors, indeed, who themselves have followed the successful concept of the former Audi A3 in the still young compact premium segment.
To reach this objective the engineers developing the successor to the Audi A3 gave themselves a very demanding brief from the start, focusing in particular on driving pleasure. Clearly defined concepts help to reach this objective, for example the emotional and dynamic exterior design together with the matching, sporting interior, a wide range of engines and transmissions for the first time including a six-cylinder version, and a chassis and suspension clearly setting the new benchmark in this class. A further objective was to outperform the high level of equipment and model features of the first A3 in order to successfully reach additional target groups.
The new Audi A3 therefore has everything it takes to continue - and, indeed, enhance - its predecessor's unique story of success. The second generation stands out through its superior sportiness, highly developed technology and the most dynamic design in its class, giving the car the same pole position clinched by the first generation of the Audi A3 right from the start

Europeans gets first look at Toyota Auris

Europeans gets first look at Toyota Auris

If you're a European who wasn't a fan of the Toyota Corolla, take heart knowing Toyota's best seller is technically gone and being replaced by this car, the Auris, which was unveiled as a concept not three weeks ago at the Paris Motor Show. Today Toyota has taken the wraps off of the production version of the Auris to give Euro folk a peek at what to expect from the company's new C-segment hatch. Initially available in both three- and five-door hatchback versions, the Auris can be had with one of no less than five engines, two gas and three diesel. The petrol powerplants include a 1.4 VVT-i (97 HP) and 1.6 Dual VVT-i (124 HP), while the oil burners are a 1.4 D-4D (90 HP), 2.4 D-4D (126 HP) and 2.2 D-4D Clean Power (177 HP). With the latter engine, the Auris can hit 62 mph in 8.1 seconds. Euros can swap cogs with the Auris's 6-speed manual transmission or a MultiMode automatic transmission with paddle shifters on select models. So now Toyota has actually unveiled two new Corollas in the past month, the Auris for Europe and the Axio / Fielder wagon in Japan. Both are two very different cars, and we couldn't find agreement from our sources about which one will be sold in the U.S. From what we gather, the U.S. will get a version of the Axio sold in Japan, though it will wear styling similar to the Auris and, for that matter, the Yaris that's already on sale in the U.S.More pics and Toyota of Europe's complete press release after the jump.

Volkswagen launches new Polo GTI

VW continues its new model push with a performance version of its Polo. The company borrowed heavily from the Golf GTI to come up with its new Polo supermini, which hits selected markets this spring, after having debuted at the Tokyo Motor Show in late 2005.A significant step up from the last Polo GTI, which delivered 125 hp, the new GTI model pumps out 150 hp, good for 0-62 mph in 8.2 seconds. The baby GTI is powered by a turbocharged and intercooled 1.8-liter, 5-valve per cylinder, four cylinder engine. Other performance upgrades include 16-inch alloys sporting 205/45 rubber, and a lowered suspension with standard ESP. Oh, yes, and red brake calipers, too! More pics after the jump.

SEAT debuts new Leon FR, intelligent lighting system

Volkswagen subsidiary SEAT is showing off its latest and greatest at its hometown Madrid Motor Show this week. Highlighting the company's announcements is its new Leon FR model. The sporty hatchback is powered by either a new 200 hp 2-liter TFSI gasoline engine or SEAT's 170 hp 2-liter TDI diesel. The top-line TFSI powerplant is good for 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in a respectable 7.3 seconds. Performance trim includes 17- or 18-inch alloy wheels, and a very nice-looking set of sport seats.SEAT's Advanced Front Lighting System is a pretty cool feature for a mid-market brand - the bi-xenon headlights are integrated with the vehicle's chassis dynamics system to adjust headlight beam direction, not only steering the headlights into a corner, but also adjusting the height of the beam as the car's load changes

Honda S2000

Honda S2000 Continues to Define Racing-Inspired Performance for 2007
Widely considered the quintessential roadster-style sports car, the S2000 is the performance icon for the Honda brand and combines uncompromising racetrack-ready performance with everyday usability.Introduced in 1999, the S2000 rewards driving enthusiasts with a potent 237 horsepower, 2.2-liter, 16-valve DOHC VTEC 4-cylinder engine and a precise, short throw 6-speed manual transmission, along with tenacious handling and a perfect 50/50 weight balance. Continuing with significant improvements made to the 2006 model, the 2007 Honda S2000 includes an electronic Drive-by-Wire (DBW) Throttle System, Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA), Maintenance Minder system, standard headrest speakers, an outside temperature gauge and an engine start button."The Honda S2000 is a true performance vehicle that provides customers with an exciting experience behind the wheel," said John Mendel, senior vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "Since the S2000 is a car designed by enthusiasts for enthusiasts, it can easily satisfy daily driving needs without sacrificing track-worthy performance."The S2000's renowned high-revving, 2.2-liter, 16-valve DOHC VTEC 4-cylinder engine remains the pinnacle of naturally aspirated performance technology, delivering 237 horsepower at 7,800 rpm and 162 lb-ft of torque at 6,800 rpm. Perfectly complimenting the engine's output characteristics is a compact, longitudinally-mounted, close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission that features a direct linkage for precise shifting and quick throws. The S2000 comes equipped with a Drive-by-Wire throttle control system eliminating the need for a mechanical connection between the throttle pedal and the engine. This enables continuous electronic monitoring and adjustment of throttle pedal sensitivity to create an ideal match between throttle response and driving conditions. The system also manages the S2000's cruise control ******** for greater precision.Honda's VSA system makes the S2000 more stable and forgiving during street driving or in inclement weather conditions. Working in concert with the Drive-by-Wire system, VSA continuously monitors yaw rate, steering input, throttle input, and braking pressure to determine if the car is following the driver's intended path, and can independently coordinate each of the disk brakes through the 4-channel anti-lock brake system, along with the throttle, to enhance vehicle stability. While this serves to effectively enhance driver control during acceleration, braking, and cornering, the system can be disabled with the touch of a button when conditions warrant it. To help provide optimum stopping power, the braking system also features Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist. The S2000's rear-wheel-drive chassis and powertrain layout results in a 50/50 front/rear weight distribution for perfect balance when cornering, while its hybrid monocoque body and "high X-bone frame" results in exceptional structural rigidity. Combined with a front and rear double wishbone suspension, precise electric power steering, and a torque-sensing limited slip differential, the end result is a complete, no compromise, performance package for the enthusiast driver.Standard features for the S2000 include a power retractable convertible top, 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels, leather trimmed seats and High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps with daytime running lights. An aluminum hardtop and XM Satellite Radio are available as dealer installed options. For 2007, the S2000 is available in six colors, including, Laguna Blue Pearl, Silverstone Metallic, New Formula Red, Rio Yellow Pearl, Berlina Black and Grand Prix White.

Honda Type R

The latest high performance Civic is a more refined ´superhatch´ than the outgoing Type R, but this doesn´t mean that it´s lost any of it´s driving excitement. Improved comfort levels, integrated styling and handling that has been tuned to enhance responsiveness and predictability look set to make this Type R the most exciting version to date.
The new Type R is still powered by the naturally aspirated, high revving 2.0-litre DOHC i-VTEC engine, but the unit has undergone significant reworkings to improve the responsiveness - using a new balancer shaft and drive by wire throttle control. VTEC variable valve timing and VTC variable inlet camshaft technology continue to underpin the structure of the engine.
Max power now sits at 201PS reached at 8,000rpm and the car is generally more responsive, while new improved aerodynamics make sure that the car cleanly cuts through the air.
Acceleration figures are expected to be the same as the 6.6 second. 0-62mph is the time of the outgoing Type R and this should be matched by its successor - with a top speed reaching 146mph. The Civic 5 door chassis forms the basis for the 3-door models and provides a perfect platform for the Type R.
Looks wise, the already strong appearance of the Civic has been enhanced to build an aggressive and assertive look. Front and rear spoilers, triangular foglights and 18" seven-spoke alloys all add to its dominating stance.
The interior is accentuated with the effective Dual Zone dash which is seen in other Civic models, but in the Type R features red illuminated dials set off by gun-metal effect switch panels on either side of the central display. A black, leather-covered steering wheel with red stitching and central ‘H’ logo take centre stage, while the gear shift knob with aluminium-finish has a black boot with red stitching.
To make this car even more exclusive, each Type R will also feature a plaque engraved with the car’s unique serial number is placed just ahead of the gear lever.
Pricing is yet to be announced. To read about the Civic Type R in more detail click here.

Audi A8

July 13, 2002 - Audi has released the first official photos of the new A8, which will have it's public debut at the Paris Motor Show in September. With the new A8, Audi seeks "to redefine the notion of sports appeal in the luxury segment, with compelling handling, pioneering technology and exclusive design and equipment." As the brand's flagship model, it uncompromisingly demonstrates the identity of the next generation of Audi models. There were four priority areas in the development of the new Audi A8: design, lightweight construction, dynamism and electronics. These four areas were linked by a single idea: the idea of ease. In other words, ease in the sense of design harmony, ease of acceleration, the ease with which it can be handled - the driver of an A8 should not have the impression of handling a large saloon car - and, finally, ease of operation. Its design gives visual expression to the unique character of the new A8. Expansive, strikingly arched surfaces are framed by precisely plotted lines. The bodyside theme continues the clean, controlled surfaces seen on the A6, but with more muscular proportions. A deep bevel to the lower door surfaces, together with a sharply defined rocker section adds interest to the bodyside, and seeks to give the car a lighter and more dynamic appearance. This theme is continued around the vehicle, with similar forms on the front and rear bumpers. The silhouette of flat front and short body overhangs hint at the cars dynamic potential. Two V8 engines, a 4.2 litre version with an output of 246 kW (335 bhp) and a 3.7 litre version developing 206 kW (280 bhp), will be available at the market launch in autumn 2002. One new feature in the A8 is the 6-speed automatic transmission with tiptronic ********, which constantly assures an optimum transition between the various speed stages. As an option, it is also possible to change gear via shift paddles mounted on the steering wheel; the ergonomic advantages of this concept have already been demonstrated on Audi's R8 Le Mans race car.The A8's aluminium body is built using the Audi Space Frame (ASF). Quattro permanent four-wheel drive remains unequalled in the luxury segment. It translates engine performance into superbly effective propulsion and lateral support. The air suspension for the new A8's aluminium running gear provides an optimum characteristic in every driving situation: By means of the continuously variable damper settings, the adaptive air suspension reduces body movements, while optimising roadholding and ride comfort. The driver can choose between three predefined settings, for a suspension characteristic ranging from overtly sporty to ultra-comfortable.In the luxurious interior, the driver will find an innovative approach to interacting with the vehicle's technology and its communication systems, in the guise of the Multi Media Interface (MMI). Ingenious ergonomics and an intrinsically logical and therefore self-evident operating concept make this car uniquely easy to operate, allowing the driver to concentrate on the traffic. When it's predecessor was launched in 1994, the A8 was the first production saloon to have an aluminium body. The low weight of the ASF Audi Space Frame brought a significant gain in operating dynamics, while reversing the upward spiral of body weight. At the same time, Audi set a new benchmark for dynamic handling in the luxury car class thanks to its quattro drive.Such characteristics and such a success story set a very high standard for its successor, which sets out with the clear objective of building on its predecessor's strengths and doing things even better in the areas in which the previous model excelled
